Be aware that the list of accidents on The Railways Archive: Accident Archive website is not complete. I didn't find the 20thC fatal accident I was researching on it.  I've checked it again and see that 3 records of accidents in 1870s are new additions. So if you're sure it was a rail accident it may be worth revisiting that site now and again. If you find information about the accident from another source I think you can add it to the list on The Railways Archive.
If you know approximate year and place of death you could search for a report in newspapers. FindMyPast has a newspaper collection. Other newspaper archives exist.

The Probate Index on Ancestry has an administration for a David Rimmer of 22 Carno Street Liverpool who died 11 December 1943. Administration was granted to James Arthur Rimmer.

This sounds like your David with the date of death you should be able to search the Liverpool papers to find a report of the accident.

There is nothing in the British Newspaper Archive for a David Rimmer killed on the railway in 1943, the only David Rimmer mentioned is a Private David Rimmer,  killed in action the Middle East. Liverpool Echo - Saturday 28 August 1943

IT might be easier to just buy David's death certificate which will show the cause if death. Family stories can sometimes be very different to the actual facts.

I'd also look up 22 Carno Street in the National Identity Register it might be David's parents' home.
