Hi Everyone
Apologies for not getting back sooner - Had to go out not long after my post and didn't get back till late.
Yes I failed to comment after re-reading my post that as far as Royston's Granddaughter is aware Harriett was Royston's mother. Sorry for not confirming that.
Thanks for all the updates though and searches/advice - there does seem to be something in it with the Lane angle in 1911 and prior possibly.
Any other help would be great but I agree it appears that ordering the certificate may give us more to go off  :)
Thanks Phil

The biggest problem is that Royston's birth as a Knight with a mother maiden name Knight, doesn't fit with what we know about Harriet.

I'm going to have a proper look at everything you guys have advised on the last few pages of this thread over the next 24 hours and see if I can link anything.

I've also just messaged Royston's Granddaughter asking if there's anything else she knows or has Royston's birth certificate (dont think she has) and if not we'll order it.

Thanks for all your help

William Thomas Lane died in 1935 (will listings) - confirms he was living at 5 Swan Road and his will effects were left to Harriet Lane  :)

I've messaged Royston's Granddaughter again asking her to ask her mum (Roy's Daughter) if the surname "Lane" means anything.

The Ritchie surname can't be right - the only answer we need now is Royston Knight's birth and who his Mum is listed as on the birth certificate.  I'm feeling more of the opinion though that Royston could well have been adopted by Harriet Lane - we shall see! I'll keep you posted

If he was adopted as a baby i.e around 1918, it would have been unofficial and there probably won't be any records. It's also slightly strange that they didn't change his name to Lane.

Thanks Phil.
That fits with all the information found already and 'adoption' seems quite possible.

What seems odd though, is the relative's reference to Harriet (Knight) and the surname Ritchie. This name must have been known in the family   :-\

Hopefully all will be revealed with the birth certificate.

We have this marriage (mentioned right at the beginning)

Marriages Dec 1922

KNIGHT    Harriet E    Ritchie
RITCHIE    Robert    Knight
Gloucester    6a   721

Could it just be a coincidence with the name Harriet? ie Harriet E Knight is Royston's birth mother but he was brought up (not formally adopted as his name was never changed) by Harriet Lane?

Hi Groom
Maybe the Ritchie surname link may have come from this marriage and that Royston's Daughter did some research (dont know to what extent) and maybe came across this herself and thought Harriett married Robert Ritchie.
But as we know Harriet was definitely a Lane prior to Royston's birth and then as I've stated William Thomas Lane died in 1935 leaving all his will to Harriet.  Not something you'd do if she went and married someone else in 1922  :)
