Gloucester Citizen 18 October 1930 has Robert Ritchie's (age 39) funeral report.

He died in Felixstowe Cottage Hospital.

So what we guessed was correct! Royston's birth mother was Harriet Knight but he was brought up by Harriet Lane. So to follow his family back it's Harriet Knight you need to look at, not Harriet Lane.

But as we know Harriet was definitely a Lane prior to Royston's birth and then as I've stated William Thomas Lane died in 1935 leaving all his will to Harriet.  Not something you'd do if she went and married someone else in 1922  :)

Just to clarify as I had suggested earlier that the will could be checked. There doesn't appear to be a will, William died at the County Mental Hospital and administration of his estate was granted to his widow Harriet.

Census shows that Harriett E Knight was living in Sweetbriar Street, Gloucester which is just around the corner of Swan Road.

There probably isn't one! Harriet Knight wasn't that young was she when Royston was born in 1918? Perhaps she'd been engaged to his father in WW1 and he'd been killed, probably we'll never know that. We also don't know for certain that Royston was adopted by the Lanes, they may just have fostered him and he may have lived part time with his mother, it does seem as if the family knew who she was.
