Edward Hogg, Gardener of Newby Wiske
« on: Friday 28 July 17 20:39 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

My ancestor, Edward Hogg (c 1808-1880) was a gardener at Newby Wiske, in the parish of Kirkby Wiske near Thirsk, North Yorkshire.  As he lived in Newby Wiske, a small hamlet, I'm curious to see where he might have worked?  And what kind of work might he have done ... for example, whose garden would he have attended?  His fellow villagers?  A local hall?  Also, would he have decided on plants and designed spaces?  What plants might he have worked with?

Sorry, I've a range of questions.

Thank you.

Is it possible he was a gardener at Newby wiske hall, it appears to have had large gardens at that time, including a walled garden which typically needed three or four gardeners.

An "assistant gardener". Implies to me there was more than one gardener at his place of work, I think it unlikely that there was anywhere else in the area that would need more than one gardener.

Thank you for this - Newby Wiske Hall seems likely.  I know very little about him other than he won an award for growing cabbages (second class) in 1839.  I wonder if there are any staff photos/account  of the hall at that time?

Hi again, I would assume you know he married Mary Miller 23rd May 1829 Easingwold, Edward of Coxwold at marriage.

Thank you - yes, I did know that, but I mean I don't much about him as a person.  I have found a possible baptism and worked on that family line but it doesn't match exactly (i.e. there is a EDMUND CHARLES HOGG baptised in 1807), but then that isn't the same as Edward Hogg, is it?

Hey yes, that is the Edmund Charles Hogg.  I've looked into these parents, and it seems that this is the only Edward in the area.
