East/Peadle family of Northiam/Rye in Sussex in 1600s
« on: Friday 28 July 17 20:53 BST (UK) »
Hi, can anyone help?

Constance Peadle, born 1656 in Rye was married to James Vigor.  They were my 6xgreat-grandparents.  Constance was born to John Peadle and "Dorothy" East who were married in 1654 in Rye.

I've looked for Dorothy's birth and have found the birth of a Dorothia to a Guliemli East in Northiam in 1628.  She appears to have two sisters, Ann born 1623 and Maria born 1625.

How do I find the mother to the three girls?

Thanks.

Might be more connected East baptisms later at Northiam.
Including Thomas (1637) and a (second?) Mary (1640), parents William + Allic/e (source FamilySearch)
Sussex Marriage Index has a possibility
2 March 1622/3
Rye, East Sussex
Wm East, of Beckley + Alles Sharp, of Northiam

There is a burial of Mary, the wife of William East, 24 November 1638, Northiam
But definitely a Thomas East baptized there, 16 April 1637, son of William East, by his wife Alice
(BT's again)

Hi
Bishops Transcripts, copies of the parish registers made annually, which are available to view on FamilySearch if you are registered with the website.
We could see East Sussex parish registers at home for a short time, but they have been removed. But we can still view BT's for the whole county (at the moment!)
So, if you do decide to register, the BT with the Thomas East baptism is here
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6D97-474?i=77&cat=1021979

and the next image has the burial of Mary East in the following year

Looking on SFHG's transcripts I've found the following for Northiam:

Baptisms - all with father as William East:

Anne 01 Feb 1624 (FamilySearch has the father as Gulielmi)
Mary 20 Nov 1625 (FamilySearch has the father as Gulielmi)
Dorothy 14 Dec 1628  (FamilySearch has forename as Dorothia and father as Gulielmi)
Mary 08 Jan 1632
William 30 Nov 1634
Mary 29 Nov 1640

I couldn't find the Thomas that jonw65 found in the BTs in SFHG's transcripts but I did find him on FamilySearch for 16 Apr 1637 at Northiam.

Burials - children of William & Alice

Thomas - two burials listed 16 Apr 1637  and 15 Mar 1640.  (This indicates that William and Alice had two sons baptised Thomas but where was the second one baptised?  First Thomas baptised and buried on the same day!)
Mary 24 Nov 1638

The three baptisms for Mary make me wonder if there was more than one William East having children baptised at Northiam but there's only one William East marriage listed in SFHG's Sussex Marriage Index (as jonw65 said) and on A****ry, or somewhere along the line Gulielmi has been miss-transcribed as William (there's no marriage for a Gulielmi East in SFHG's Sussex Marriage Index) this would make sense of the Mary burial in 1638 followed by another Mary baptism in 1640.  The other possibility is that the first two Marys were buried elsewhere than at Northiam - I checked Beckley to no avail in case in William's 'marriage home parish'.
