Look-up Henry Edward Winterbottom 1861 Census, Paddock Huddersfield
« on: Saturday 29 July 17 08:25 BST (UK) »
Hello

Looking for help finding Henry Edward Winterbottom, born 1831 in Saddleworth, on the 1861 census.

On the 1851 census he is entered with his parents at Paddock Row, Paddock Road, Paddock Huddersfield.

I think he was at Paddock, 8 Aug 1868, as a Mary Winterbottom was baptised at Paddock All Saints.

According to her baptism registry, her father, Henry Winterbttom was a woollen warper of Paddock and his wife's name was Elizabeth but I cannot find a marriage for them.

He died 7 Sep 1868.

Details of Death Certificate: Henry Edward Winterbottom; Age: 37; Occupation & Address: Woollen Warper of Paddock.

I have a burial at St Mark's Longwood, 9 Sep 1868, entered as Henry Winterbottom of Paddock aged 37.

So I think I have everything right for him. Its frustrating me that I can't find him on the 1861 census.

I would be very grateful if someone could help, then I could turn my efforts to pulling my hair out over other brick walls.  ;D

Warm Regards

Karen

Was the child baptised in 1868 the Mary Winterbottom, mother's maiden name Holroyd, whose birth was registered in Huddersfield district Jun qtr 1868?

Added: this looks lokely, as the baptism record gives her birthdate as 9 April.

Hi avm228

Yes I looked at the 1863 Elland marriage, but Henry's father's name was Henry not Charles. Unless it was written in error?

If it was, would the marriage certificate have the same error? Could be worth a look.

Warm regards

Hi avm228

The baptism register I have for Mary Winterbottom on from ancestry has her birth as 9 Apr 1868 but it doesn't have a mother's maiden.

I'm a bit confused. Is there another register that enters her mother's maiden?

The registration for Jun quarter 1868 does look promising.

Thank you

Warm regards Karen

Just had a quick look and I think it is the wrong marriage.

Henry Winterbottom born 1831 Netherton son of Charles & Mary Winterbottom, baptised South Crosland 1832. They also had a son Charles Winterbottom born 1864 born Paddock & baptised South Crosland.

A Henry E. Winterbottom is buried in New York in 1874 but don't have ancestry worldwide so do not have any details.

It is the civil birth registration, not the baptism, which yields mother's maiden name Holroyd.  See the GRO online index: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

But it is looking like the Henry Winterbottom who married Elizabeth Holroyd and had daughter Mary is probably not the same person as your Henry Edward Winterbottom, son of Henry.

No, a marriage certificate doesn't give better information than the original marriage register.  In any event I don't believe there is an error here - as John has identified, there was a Henry son of Charles, of the right age, who seems to be the one who married Elizabeth Holroyd.

Hi avm228 I think you are right and I might have the death wrong also and he may have gone to America.

Thank you for your help, I'd rather have no records than wrong records
