OK 1885 it was.

Robert Scott,aged 70, general labourer, widower of Alice Irving, died 28 June 1885 , Ecclefchan.
Parents 0 Christopher Scott, Cotton Weaver  and Agnes** MS Weald. Both deceased
Informant James Scott, son (not present)
Cause - Inflammation of the Lungs, Large tumours left side of chest and neck. (sounds not nice at all  )

** added - I assume that son James got his grandmother's name wrong, as all other records suggest it was Esther.

Just wondering if son James also worked on the railways -his address given as Beattock on the deat hcert. 
I so remember all those train journeys I did between Inverness and Euston and the pull up to Beattock Summit

James was a foreman plate layer in Moffat on the 1881.

I would definitely say James did work on the railway. That family only stopped working on the railway about 20'years ago! All that time and the Scott family had a connection with railways.
I wonder why the mother was written down as Agnes and not her actual name of Esther?

The most likely reason is that he got her name mixed up with another relative - I've seen this quite frequently on death certs.  He most likely wouldn't have known her, and any reference to her in the family would probably have been as 'your grandmother' or 'my mother' etc...
