Thank you Rosie.
This could be him because I know 1841 he is a cotton weaver too. I think his wife died 1849 too so the reason why she isn't on the census?
I will look into it more now  :)

Yes did see Robert was on his own with his family don't see Robert on the 1881 census possible death for Robert Scott on Scotlands People 1871 age 58 might be worth a try

Death for a Robert Scott, aged 70, 1885, Hoddom

It should give his parents' names. This is on ScotlandsPeople and will cost 6 credits

Gadget

Added - The one that Rosie found in 1871 died in Dumfries  not Hoddom. Ecclefechan, where they were in 1871 is in Hoddom parish.

OK 1885 it was.

Robert Scott, aged 70, general labourer, widower of Alice Irving, died 28 June 1885 , Ecclefchan.
Parents 0 Christopher Scott, Cotton Weaver  and Agnes** MS Weald. Both deceased
Informant James Scott, son (not present)
Cause - Inflammation of the Lungs, Large tumours left side of chest and neck. (sounds not nice at all  :( )

Gadget

** added - I assume that son James got his grandmother's name wrong, as all other records suggest it was Esther.

Still can't find him on the 1881. Nearest so far is aged 60, born Hoddom, working on railways:

Cleugh Cottage, West Calder, Midlothian
Household of Willim Edgar.....

Robert Scott, widower, 60, labourer on railway, b. Hoddom, Dumfriesshire

It could be him.

Also with him are Robert Easton, 39 and William Robertson, 64, both b. Hoddom.  They might well have all found work on the railways and then he returned home through illness or work ending.  Age would be whatever he told William Edgar (also born Hoddom).
