Trying to find death for Joseph STONER (b1799)
« on: Saturday 29 July 17 18:00 BST (UK) »
I'm stumped trying to find a convincing death for Joseph STONER born 29 Mar 1799 in Barwick-in-Elmet son to Thomas STONER and Ann (BELL), brother to the Methodist preacher David STONER. I've seen a garbled index entry from the Knaresborough Post that suggests 1871 and there is an entry a Stoner   Joseph   —   —   1871   in the Index To Death Duty Registers 1796-1903 but I no longer have an active findmypast subscription.
The only matching death in FreeBMD is
Deaths Dec 1871
Stoner    Joseph    63    W. Derby    8b   402
which is way out on age and the place is unlikely.  Any suggestions how to tie this off?
David

Could this be your man? -

Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer 26 January 1871 -

January 2 at Detroit, US, aged 72, brother of the late Rev David Stoner and late of the firm Stoner & Elsworth, Tolston Lodge Academy, Tadcaster.

The death notice also appears in Knaresborough Post 28 January 1871.

JJen - many thanks. That makes a lot of sense as he had a sister Ellen (STONER) CROFT who is buried in that very cemetery! I never thought Joseph had made the trip to America and have always been looking for his death in the UK.
