I read it as 61.00 North X 49.7 West. This would give a position of roughly 200 miles East South East of Cape Farewell Greenland.

I bow to the Superior technology of Google Earth.
It's been nearly 50 years since I was up that way. From memory my rough estimated position was a little out.
The fact of the matter is. Given the severe weather, not withstanding tide and currents it would have been extremely difficult to obtain an accurate fix. No GPS in those days.
So all we can say in certainty is, he was drowned off the coast of Greenland. RIP.
