Trying to find death certificate for my grandfather
« on: Sunday 30 July 17 02:42 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I am trying to find a death certificate for my grandfather:

Isak Bernard Melo
Born: 29 Jan 1883 in Kristiansund, More og Romsdal, Norway
He came to the USA around 1917-1918
but went back to Norway frequently because my father Torleif was born in 1922 in Bergen, Norway.
Death.1944 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York

I am not sure of his date of death to be honest. He was a blacksmith for a shipping company and was frequently at sea.  Some in the family say he died at sea but I cannot find any information on that.  I have some sources that I found saying he was in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela etc.
But I cannot get any hard information on when and where died and where he is buried.

Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks!
Erica

Hi Rosie,
Thanks for your reply.  Yes, I was able to find that as well. :)  Hopefully I can find the place of death and where he was buried.  I appreciate it!

I also was able to find his WWII Draft Registration card at age 59 (!)  in 1942 and his residence at the time was Puerto Rico.  He was employed by the Standard Dredging Company.  If he died at sea, wouldn't there be records? Thanks!

I would think there would be records somewhere or a newspaper report

I found a Will and Probate record where my grandmother received some money but the death date was inferred so no one has an exact death date nor place, nor body, unfortunately.  Given the history, it sounds like he died at sea in Puerto Rico while working for the Standard Dredging Company during WW2.
