Would an illusive relative, William Horace Wickens, appear by name in the 1891 Census if he were then in a school or training center in the Southampton-Portsmouth area? Was there such a place then that trained marine engineers?

An engineer in 1891  is likely to be an engine operator rather than a technical engineer.

OK. Doesn't that require training somehow? A marine engineer became a subgroup specialty of engineering as a profession apart from engineers in 1889. They also designed, built, tested, or repaired ships. I think this fellow did work in the engine room of a ship. Where did he get the knowledge? He is not in any Census after 1881 Perhaps I could find him in a school or whatever in 1891. Does the cited area have one? If so, is there a location area to find it?

Is this William Horace Wickens baptized 1869 in Kingston upon Thames. If so then in 1891 census he can be found at 30 Rochester Street in Southampton. The first name is not clear & he's recorded as 19, so age slightly out & he's a railway porter. Birth place is Kingston though.

A William Horace Wickens aged 23 living at 30 Rochester St joined Lodge of Peace & Hope (freemasons) on 18 July 1892. He was recorded as a marine engineer. As far as I can see he paid his subs of 2d in 1893 to 1895 & then 4d in 1897 & 1898. However nothing seems to have been paid after 1898, perhaps he sailed off from Southampton docks.

In 1901 census he's not recorded at 30 Rochester Street.

Hi,

I saw that entry too, but I think it is Eric WICKENS, William's brother.

Israel Eric WICKENS    Mar Q 1872    Kingston    2a  297

Maybe William went to live with him :-\

William H. is not in the 1891 Census. He is in no Census or BMD index after 1881. That's his brother Eric in 1891. He is the porter. After 1881, Wm.H. is absent from public records and only appears in private ones. William does live in #30 in 1892, not 1891, when he joins the Masons and he pays dues to it thru 1899. That's why I asked the question that no one has answered. Do schools list all students during a Census?
I'm beginning to think he might have been homosexual in an age of Oscar Wilde type of persecution. He is mentioned in his mother's will in 1902, meaning that he was alive, but getting virtually nothing, all going to Eric.

The answer to that as far as I know is, yes. I've found several listed in schools where they have been boarding.

He is in a school in 1881 - 8, Crowther Terrace, Holdenhurst, Christchurch, so by 1891 would be 21/22 and wouldn't still be at school.

Yes, they should, but William would have been too old for what we consider to be a school.

It is possible that William did an apprenticeship, but for that date I'm not sure where he might have done this.

If he signed on as a merchant seaman then he might have done training on the job.

Might he have gone by the name Horace?
