St John the Baptist Tiffield access
« on: Monday 31 July 17 15:20 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there is a way to visit St John's Tiffield in mid week?  My daughter and I would like to see inside the church but we are aware that many village churches are locked up unless there is a service on. We are thinking of making a trip from Berkshire in August and it would be really helpful if we knew what to expect before we get there.

Afraid this is one church  I've never actually been to, although I've been to Tiffield regularly! So I don't know whether it's open, but I somehow doubt it. If I have time over the next couple of days, I'll pop up and see, but I can't go today.

The vicar currently lives in Pattishall, see https://www.achurchnearyou.com/tiffield-st-john-the-baptist/ on the contact tab for a name and phone number

As she is vicar of four parishes (including Tiffield), she may well refer you on to someone who lives in the village, maybe a churchwarden?

Alternatively, there's a phone number for the parish clerk at the bottom of the page on the village website

I went up to Tiffield this afternoon, and yes, the church is locked, but there is a note to say that there's a key next door at Vernon Lodge. BUT there was a new notice on the door warning there are wasps inside!  :o

So you may need to talk to someone to find out about the wasps, and if appropriate, how to arrange to pick the key up.

Thank you for the information about the notices. Hopefully the wasps will have left, or have been dealt with, by the time we arrive in a couple of weeks!

Well we made our trip to Northamptonshire. Most successful--Found a document in the Record Office  dated 1702 which showed why our branch of the Neales left Tiffield and who got the money!  It even had my 7x great grandmother's signature on it.Then on to Tiffield church where the most helpful and knowledgable holder of the key showed us round the church and pointed out all the 17th century MIs. We were warned about the wasps but I didn't see a single one!
Thank you again  Barbara
