William Tayles-11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own)
« on: Monday 31 July 17 22:46 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on the military service of William Tayles
Born 11-11-1862 Swarby, Lincolnshire
From Chelsea Pensioner Service Records
11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own)
Reg. No. 1684
Attested 28-6-1878 (lied about his age)
Served to 19-2-1884
Married Aunsby, Lincolnshire 2-5-1886
Discharged 30-6-1890
1891 census Sproxton, Leicestershire as Ag Lab
1901 census Sproxton, Leicestershire as Private Royal Reserve Hussars
The time served on the record is in two parts and I understand this is part active service and part reserve, is that correct?
Can someone tell me where he would have trained and served and any other details?
Many thanks,
Comberton

His attestation was for an engagement of 8 years with the colours followed by 4 years on the reserve with a caveat about an year's additional service if abroad or in the event of a war.  He did indeed serve 12 years total but divided into 5 years plus active service followed by 6 plus on the reserve which suggests, although it is not recorded on the extant record, that he changed his commitment somewhere along the way.

I believe he would have been trained with the regiment's depot which in 1878 was at Colchester.  Their stations during the time he served were all in UK - 78 Colchester 79/80 Aldershot 81/82 London 83/84 Leeds.
