Sheppards Barton Baptist Chapel, Frome
« on: Tuesday 01 August 17 11:14 BST (UK) »
Looking at the earliest 25 inch O.S. maps of Frome, one notices several Baptist chapels. I believe there were five. I have a certificate of a marriage that took place at Sheppards Barton Chapel in 1905 but cannot see the chapel marked on any of the above mentioned maps. Can anyone offer an explanation? Thanks, Toby.

Hi, according to Wiki the Sheppards Barton chapel built 1708, demolished in 1850 and replaced with another building. That building was closed 2001. One part still used, residential,  but the main church disused. It is now called South Parade.
Hope you can see that on a map.

I can subscribe to that jusnoneed. I could imagine that their Baptist chapel would retain it's name when it was moved to larger premises In South Terrace. The bride of interest to me would have less distance to travel as she lived in 1, South Terrace. All of 30 yards. Bet she was late. Thanks for your help. T.

I find that Frome was one place that was covered by the O.S. 1 : 500 survey of 1885.
Sheet XXX.14.24 shows the Baptist chapel in South Terrace specifically labelled
Sheppards Barton Chapel ( General Baptist) ( Seating 500). This confirms everything and the matter can now be closed. T.
