Wow! This is amazing! Thank you very much. This means so much to me in my research of the Baxter family. I am first generation in the States. My father left Scotland and came to the States in 1957. So far traced the Baxter family to John Baxter in 1710. Thank you, thank you! BBaxter

Wikipedia: Presbyterian precentors
In Presbyterian churches that worship in the historical fashion (i.e., sing a cappella; see Presbyterian worship), a precentor is a person (man or woman, not necessarily clergy) who leads the singing, often by means of conducting techniques, but sometimes just by singing from amongst the congregation.

During the 16th and 17th centuries the interior of St. John’s Kirk was divided into 3 separate Kirks named East, West & Middle...
…Furthermore, in the new Presbyterian order large congregations were divided into smaller units that could be managed by a single parish minister. This led to large church buildings being divided by walls into two, or even three separate churches.  And so, at the end of the 16th century the three western bays of St John’s were walled off to form a separate “West Kirk”, with its own minister, and later two further churches were created from the transepts and choir. These became the East and Middle Kirks.

From the article "She was present at Carrick Fergus, when it was attacked by Thurot’s fleet, and remembers of hearing the people there, who had been at the siege of Londonderry, talk of the cruel manner in which the inhabitants were driven in under the walls of the city."

Would you be able to shed light on this? Carrick Fergus? Londonderry? Margaret's maiden name was Mitchell. Do you think she could have been from Ireland?

Wikipedia
The Battle of Carrickfergus took place in February 1760 in Carrick Fergus, Kingdom of Ireland during the Seven Years' War. A force of 600 French troops landed under the command of the Privateer François Thurot, overwhelmed the small garrison of the town, and captured its castle.

If Margaret was at the Battle of Carrick Fergus she would be 20 years old.
Six years later she marries William Baxter in Stirling.
It's entirely possible that Margaret was born in Ireland.
Another possibility is that Margaret's father was a soldier and was stationed in Carrick Fergus in 1760.
I don't know.

Is this the family?

Yes, I am a direct descendant of William's son William Baxter born in 1772. I did not have his siblings Walter and Elspeth in my tree so thank you! I will add them to my tree. Walter is a name that comes up in our family-my father's uncle was Walter Baxter-a very good soccer player in Rutherglen-later came to the States.

John Baxter born in about 1710 is the father of first William Baxter. John Baxter married Marjory Curlaw 26 Oct 1729. That is as far back as I can go so far.

So much to learn! Thank you very much, BBaxter

This is in the IGI:
Name   John Baxter
Spouse   Marjory Curlaw
Event Date   26 Oct 1729, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:MZLM-YDZ
This is a contributed IGI meaning that someone has added the info of William Baxter & Margaret Mitchell with two of their kids Elspeth & William.
If the person is not you who contributed this information then there is at least one other person researching your tree.

This looks like your Walter Baxter.

1841 census: Edinburgh Road, Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Walter   Baxter      64   1777   Lanarkshire
Mary   Baxter      65   1776   Lanarkshire
James   Baxter      18   1823   Lanarkshire
Mary   Baxter      0   1841   Lanarkshire

1851 census: Colliers Row, 17, Barony, Northern, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Walter   Baxter   Head   74   1777   Coal Miner Glasgow

Scotlandspeople Death Certificate

His mothers name is Mitchell. This should be absolute proof that this Walter is yours.
By that I mean you will have to download the DC from SP.
