Can I suggest you check the 1939 for William, which will give you his date of birth. Then send for the birth certificate of William with mmn Dempsey. If it is the same, then I think it must be the correct one and the information on the death certificate is wrong. It really depends who supplied that information, especially as he died away from home.

Can anyone actually find Samuel Millard before he gets married?

There's a marriage in 1906. 4 children with mmn of Dempsey. He's in the 1911 with his wife and a child. Then he dies in 1936.

Mary ann dempsey can be found in 1901, 1891 & 1881 and her parents marry in 1878.

But samuel - i've got zip.

Williams wife was Elizabeth Jones, she did remarry twice after he died.
There is a William Courtney Millard born in Wigan around the same time of my William, who's father is Samuel Millard. On one of his marriage records its 80 Walthew lane exactly the same address that on Samuels cemetery records where he is buried with Mary Ann so that mustn't be my Samuel and Mary Ann.

I didn't think that maybe they have been given the wrong information completely as they had died before my William, I will definitely have to order his marriage certificate to see if his dads name is on as I've come to a dead end finding these people in the UK.

The exact date of birth in 1939 does not match with the quarter given for the birth registration of William Millard born Wigan mmn Dempsey. That William's birth was registered Jan/Feb/Mar 1915 and the William in 1939 was born later in the year.

Looking on the GRO site there is only one William Millard registered in Lancashire in the right quarter
