HODGSON family group missing from 1841 census
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 08:34 BST (UK) »
I'm looking to trace the whereabouts of the HODSGON family in the 1841 census. The family group:

John b. 1788 Lockington, Yorkshire
Mary (born ALLISON/ELLISON) b. 1786 Alnwick, Northumberland
William b. 1 Aug 1812 Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Isabella b. 17 February 1815 Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Richard b. 19 March 1820 (possibly Hull)
Emma b. 15 Oct 1827 Hull, Yorkshire
George b. abt. 1831 (possibly Hull)

The family should be in Pontefract, Yorkshire or possibly Hull. I can certainly find Isabella in service in Woolmarket, Pontefract with Lady Alicia IBBETSON. I think I have her brother Richard working as a painter also in Woolmarket, Pontefract (though he was later a cellar-man and wine & spirit merchant like his father John).

In 1841 John had premises as a wine & spirit merchant in Marketplace, Pontefract and earlier seems to have run (ginger beer) brewery premises in Humber Street, Hull prior. One family address given is Humber Bank, Hull.

I cannot find an 1841 entry for John, Mary, William, Emma or George individually or together which makes me think they missed the census as a unit. Is it possible the family went unrecorded? Or have I just not looked hard enough?

They may have gone unrecorded or the spelling of the surname is a problem.

I would try looking for first name/birth year only in the area you think they should be living and any similar surnames to Hodgson that come up are worth a second look.

It's also possible one or more of them had passed away - have you got any or all of the missing people after 1841? **

** I can see John - Mary - Emma together in 1851
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

I've got them all surviving after 1841

Parents John and Mary with Emma are living in Pontefract (John dies 1853, Mary 1858, Emma marries Thomas FARRER the year after her father dies).
Son William has married Hannah HESELTINE and is living in Hull in 1851
Isabella has married Joseph SCOTT and is living in Pontefract with first son Frederick.
Richard has married Elizabeth WADD, has 3 children and is living in Pannal working as a Spirit Warehouseman in 1851

It's just the frustration of not finding the main family group in the 1841.

One of my families is definitely missing from the 1841 Census. They had had a new baby on the 1 Jun 1841, and the Census was taken on the 6th. The older children are scattered around relatives, but their parents and the new baby are nowhere in sight. They didn't bother to register the birth, either!
