Maiden Name - Need Help!
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 17:11 BST (UK) »
Hello

I located an ancestor, and upon finding his death cert, I cannot decipher the maiden name of his mother. I am hoping someone will be able to help me out?! I can see it starts with a D, but past that I am stuck :(

Much appreciated :)

Danes?

Where does the record come from and what year is this?  I'm assuming the deceased surname is McKeilly.  Is that right?

Not that it helps with mother Helen's maiden name, but I think the family surname is McNeilly.

Is this for a William or John who died aged 55? Have you tried checking the marriage cert (if married post 1855)?

Thanks for the responses :)

The cert is from 1876 in Lanark, Scotland

Family name is McNeilly

Haven't managed to locate the marriage cert for the parents listed...

I checked SP for the death of a male aged 55 with surname McNeilly  ;D Could only be a William or a John!

Why not contact SP and request an enhanced scan. They are very quick to respond to requests like these and the new scan of the image often makes a huge difference in respect of legibility.

I'm opting for Danes too, though upon second glance, I wondered if it may be supposed to be Davies. :-\

I agree with Monica that you should request a clearer copy from SP.

Alternatively downloading a birth, marriage or death certificate of one of his siblings might be a quick way to clarify MMN.

I think we have Irish roots for this line which will make things as always so much harder...  From what I can see, the deceased, William, had a daughter Margaret married in Dennistoun area of Glasgow in the 1870s and showing in later censuses as born c. 1855 in Ireland.

Ruskie, I thought the maiden name might be Davis too...but the letters disappear to the end.

Monica

Added: Did see this Irish entry https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F5PJ-5HS ....but doesn't help without the mother's maiden name being included!
