Frederick Anthony
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 21:54 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather Frederick Anthony (B. 1866 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire) has proved to be something of an enigma. He left my G. Grandmother just before she gave birth to her second child and ended up living in Bedford, England; I have him listed in the 1901 and 1911 census living there. Along the way he becomes a 'widower', although G Grandmother is still alive, and fathers a child with Emily Bonfield with whom he was lodging in 1901.
After 1911, I next find him emigrating to Canada. He sailed on March 25th 1922 (from Kings Lynn I believe) and landed at Toronto leaving his 'wife', Emily Anthony, at the Coach & Horses Hotel, Derringham, Kings Lynn. His stated destination was Mrs McDonald Surtees, 11 Rear Alexandra Street, Toronto, Ontario. (See attached Arrivals form)
I can find no further trace of him.
I am looking for suggestions as to where I can look next.
Many thanks in advance

Hi CW:

Are you aware that his possible son also sailed on March 25, 1922?  Frederick Anthony, age 16?, born Bedford, nearest relative - mother, Emily Anthony, etc.

Still having a look around for Frederick, born 1866.

I see from the census that Emily is also known as Emma (on 1911 census as Emma Bonfield but 1901 census as Emily).

There are Form 30s for Emma Anthony and Mable Emily Anthony who arrived on the Marburn on 26 Nov 1922. They were going to join Frederick Anthony at Cornish House, Burford, Ontario. Emma is listed as 50 and born in Luton. Mable was 22 and born in Bedford. They both list their nearest relative in England as Mrs. G. Duncan of St. Helens, Lancashire (Emma's daughter/Mable's sister).

Lisa and Jacquie, many thanks you've given me the kick start I needed. For some reason I never considered that Frederick Anthony Bonfield would lose the Bonfield name and be known as Frederick Anthony Jnr, but it makes sense.
I'm now on their tracks.
Than you for your help

It also explains why Frederick signed his Form 30 as Frederick Anthony snr too.  ;)

At Ancestry there is a Florida naturalization document for Frederick Arthur Anthony dated 1956. It says he was born 4 Aug 1906 in Bedford and gives his wife's name as Betty.

If you would like a copy of the document (which also mentions a daughter J.B. Arsenault in St. Catharines, Ontario) then please PM me your email address and I will send it to you. As she may be alive I have only used the daughter's initials.

I've sent you a PM with her full name as well as some information I found in the Canada voters lists which may be for J.B. Arsenault.
