Thomson's Land,Clarkston,Airdrie
« on: Thursday 03 August 17 16:54 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Can any one give me a location/map/photograph of the above. I have come across the name often but I can't locate it's exact position.

Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew

The census enumerator's walk can help with locating places sometimes or at least provide some general clues as to where it was and what it was close/next to.

From the 1881 census, it shows in Enumeration District 14 for New Monkland http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/LANARK/1999-07/0932179535

I haven't seen anything online either.

Why not contact here https://culturenl.co.uk/museums/archives-and-local-history-museums/airdrie-local-studies/what-we-hold/ and make enquiries of what they hold that could help you with this location.

Andrew, what period are you looking at? Can't see any ref to Thomson's Land in the VRs on SP. Wonder if there is another name linked to this address? I can see references for example to Thomson's Land, Glengowan by Airdrie.

Also, there this directory for Airdrie fro 1896 www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office/index.cfm?place=Airdrie

Monica,
The period would be the 1850's
The family were named Calder, although at times on birth documents etc. this was replaced by Cathers?
Andrew Calder (Irish)was an Iron miner.
A search of the Aidrie Directory did not show Thomson's Land. It may have been a building/tenement that was absorbed into a street name.
Thanks for that link I have sent them an e mail

Just thinking about that 1881 enumerator list. Thomson's Land shows next to the Summerlee Colliery (I think in later years also referred to as Dykehead Colliery). Maybe finding the location of that on a map would also help you further.

May be getting warm?  :)

Some of the places from Enumeration district 14 are on this map (bottom right corner):
