drysdale shop
« on: Thursday 03 August 17 20:46 BST (UK) »
I am hoping that someone could help me, I am trying to locate a Drysdale shop which was located in Portobello, it was a grocers shop in the mid 70's the early 80's.

It would be much appreciated if someone helped.

If a more knowledgeable person doesn't come along, you could try contacting porty.org.uk - they may be able to help.

Is that the 1870s and 1880s, or the 1970s and 1980s? What was the name of the proprietor? What else do you know about him/her?

There is a telephone directory listing in 1984 which shows:

J Drysdale, 77/4 Portobello High Street

No further details that could help on the listing.

In earlier years there looks to be a John R Drysdale, a licenced grocer operating from various locations in the 1970s.

Too late for online valuation rolls :( but the ones around 1980 should tell you. They can be consulted in Edinburgh Public Library, the National Library of Scotland and the National Records of Scotland, but you would either have to go in person or get someone to go on your behalf.

Hi, it looks like it could be the drysdale I am looking for. You mentioned in your post you think there was a number of drysdale 's establishments around the time I asked about or earlier, could you elaborate please.

I have arranged to have a look at the valuation roll books tomorrow in Edinburgh hopefully I will find something out.

Hi Ann

These are some of the addresses showing for a John R Drysdale, licensed grocer in Edinburgh:

1965 - 65 High Street, Musseburgh. Also that year is an entry for a John R Drysdale and Son at 12 Edinburgh Road, Queensferry.

1971 - 65 High Street, Musseburgh. John R Drysdale and Son at 5 Mid Terrace, Queensferry.
