Jarvis family
« on: Thursday 03 August 17 21:36 BST (UK) »
IN A BIT OF A PICKLE !
Have been tracing the Jarvis family for many years, but have got in abit of a mess which may mean a whole branch of my tree is wrong. Robert Jarvis is my first problem. He is listed as been born in Trowse Norflok on some census' but on others as Southwold Suffolk. Also his dob seems to vary from 1779 to 1805 ? He was married to Suzanna balls in 1831 in Suffolk. Roberts parents I think are William (1775 -1841) and Hannah hunt, who is sometimes reorded as Anne. This appears right as she is on 1851 census living with her daughter Mary Anne. As for Williams parents,I always had them as William (1730-1812) and Ann Dickerson(1733-1819) He had another wife Mary. This is where I get in a pickle..there are far to many Williams. Mary had Wm 1768-1768. Ann and Wm had William 1775-1775. William 1777-1845. Above Wm 1805-1841. So in all 4 Williams, 2 of whom survive. I know that they often called another child after a dead one, but this would mean that they had 2 living sons, both called william born 2 years apart. Baptism records show that the parents for all are William and Ann.
So PLEASE anyone with an eye for abit of detection and a free half and hour your help is very much needed 🥒

Hi there.

Please could you clarify the details you have for Robert? You say his birth was in the range 1799-1805, but that cannot be right if he married in 1798. Also William/Ann nee Dickerson would be too old to be his parents.

How many of the censuses does he appear in, and what does each one say about him?

Have you found any possible baptism(s) for Robert - if so when and where?

Perhaps a mistake here? I can see a marriage for William Jarvis to Hannah Hunt at Lowestoft, 28 Oct 1798.

Not much help but Southwald is probably Southwold which is in the Lowestoft district.
As  avm228 said there may be some confusion in your names and dates. If William Jarvis married Hannah Hunt in 1798 then your Robert is possibly their son b 28 Nov 1805.
Maybe a marriage for Robert,

Robert Jarvis m Caroline Lockwood. 04 Dec 1826. St. Margaret's, Lowestoft.

They had a son,

Robert William Jarvis. baptised 20 Oct 1830. St Margaret. Lowestoft. (although record says mmn Waines)

1841 census shows them living at Banett'S Yard. Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Thanks for the replies. Reading back I realised that I made some mistakes when writing the post....sorry!
Robert was married to Suzanna balls. His parents I think are William Jarvis (1775-1841)and Hannah hunt (1773-1863) I am sure this is right as Hannah is living with her daughter Mary Ann in 1851 census. It's William I am having trouble with as I have his parents as William (1730-1812)and Ann Dickerson (1733-1819) it's here that all the Williams appear as mentioned in the first post. Hope that clarifies a few things. X
