George William VINES (1868-1927)
« on: Thursday 03 August 17 23:52 BST (UK) »
I am interested in the life of this person after he settled in South Africa. He was born in Leicester, England and enlisted in the Royal Engineers in the late 19th century. He eventually served in South Africa and was discharged there in 1901. The service record I have seen states that he married Clara Johanna Veldsman in Kalk Bay in 1896. I know very little about the politics of the time but am curious because that sounds very much like an Afrikaans name.

I think that George died in Rondebosche in 1927 although the death notice I've seen suggested that he was of mixed race which would be incorrect. He was to be buried at Maitland Cemetery which I can see from Google is a very large cemetery. I can find nothing more on him or anything at all on Clara.

I would be interested in any additional information about George or his wife and family, if any, while in South Africa.

Simply as a matter of interest, my great uncle Ernest Vines, who was also born in Leicester, emigrated to South Africa around 1911/12 and eventually built a house in Constantia where he lived until his death. But I doubt that that he would even have been aware of his first cousin's existence let alone that he also lived in the Cape area.

Thank you for reading this. If you can help I shall be pleased to hear from you.

Tony

Here is a link to the Marriage on 23 Nov 1896
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSK6-DSFK-B?i=264&cat=244034

Cant locate an estate file for either of them
He is a Painter on his Marriage so the death you found is unlikely to be him as that person was a plumber

Might be worth looking through these parish records for children

Same church they married in

Thanks Gillian. I didn't have the marriage image. The English branch of George's family included painters, plumbers and glaziers so I don't want to exclude George's death yet, especially as the name is fairly rare in that part of the world.

I can't find any further reports of Clara yet.
