7 Floyds Row, St Aldate's Oxford
« on: Friday 04 August 17 12:15 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knew of the history of Floyds Row, St Aldate's, Oxford please, particularly number 7.

I have an interest as my great grandmother's sister is registered as living there on her marriage certificate on 30th August 1919. Her new husband is also listed as having lived there at the same time, which I thought was perhaps unusual at that time? I assume they could've been living there as live-in servants, but I am curious to know for certain to get a bit of background for them.

As I understand it, it isn't that unusual for the bride and groom to give the same address, it doesn't necessarily mean that they were living together. If the couple lived in separate parishes a friend or relatives address was often given so that they only had to pay to have the banns read in one parish.

What are the occupations on the certificate?

Hi groom,

Ah I didn't realise that that was something that used to be done (I'm still quite new to genealogy). I had googled and found that the Oxford House of Refuge was in Floyds Row, but that didn't seem correct that her husband would be living there too, but it made me wonder if I was uncovering something interesting!  ::)

She doesn't have an occupation listed and her husband is listed as a baker so my servant's theory is way out.

I think you are most probably right that they have listed the same address to save on costs as my great great aunt was born in Wiltshire.

Thank you for replying so quickly and thank you for finding those images aswell :)

I agree with what groom says.

We aren't allowed to do specific look-ups on the 1911 census, but I think it's in order for me to say that I just took a quick look at the households there then, and that none of them seemed the sort to have live-in servants. I'd imagine the same would most likely hold true in 1919.

I have 'fond' memories of Floyd's Row - not the houses, they were demolished before my time - but the Unemployment Benefit Office and police station which replaced them.  The UBO was too small for the number of claimants and there would be a queue in all weathers stretching alongside the police station and nearly out to the main road, St Aldate's.

The PS is still there, has been extended, and was used in episodes of 'Inspector Morse' I believe.

Thanks to groom for adding another Oxford site to my collection :)
