1926 CALIFORNIAN MARRIAGE - WILCOX & POWERS***COMPLETED*****
« on: Friday 04 August 17 14:40 BST (UK) »
PLEASE DISREGARD - MANAGED TO FIND THE ORIGINAL COPY THANKS TO HELP FROM ROOTSCHAT INFO BOARD. YES, THIS WAS THE CORRECT MARRIAGE OF THE AUSTRALIAN I WAS AFTER.

Is anybody able to help with the details of a 1926 Californian Marriage between Edward WILCOX and Georgia Mae POWERS, please? I'm trying to establish whether Edward WILCOX is actually an Australian, Edwin WILLCOCK.

I've found the Australian Edwin WILLCOCK going to the US, changing his name and fighting for the US in WW1, and also his Draft details for WW2. I have his Censuses, his Death information (even his military grave), but I just want to confirm this marriage as his, as the 1930 Census did indicate a wife named Georgia, but she "disappears" after that.

If somebody can find this marriage, and all its information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Les :-)

It looks like they were in Oregon for the 1930 census and were married for about 3 years then.  Are you sure that they married in California in 1926?

The 1930 Census was the only reference I had for his marriage to "Georgia". I found the possible marriage for them in San Francisco 1926 on a basic search with same names and similar birth years.

Using that information, I found (after 2 hours!) the original Marriage Certificate on line at the Family Search website. Yes, he went by his new American name of "Edward WILCOX, but the certificate said he was born in Australia on the correct birth date, and named his parents correctly, although he did indicate father born in New York and mother Ireland, when in fact they were both born in Australia, as he was. Maybe he needed an American "connection" to become an American or join US Army in WW1?

Edwin WILLCOCK/Edward WILCOX is actually my wife's great uncle. Family lore has it he left Australia for US "under a cloud", though he still kept in contact with a brother. On his US Obituary, it was stated he had no relatives in US, but confirmed he did keep in contact with his brother in Australia.

Yes, I'm confident I have the person/marriage I was looking for - thanks anyway.

It looks like he petitioned for naturalization based on his military service - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K8Z7-4D1

Maybe this is the disappeared Georgia in 1940, married but not living with her husband - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K985-8LQ

There is an Alonzo Lee Stith listed as single in Los Banos, Merced, California in 1930 census. He listed as a boarder. In the  1940 census, he states he is married, but no wife is listed and that in 1935 he was in Rural, Kern, California. So it appears he left Los Banos after 1930 but before 1935 and then returned again by 1940 and is now married.???

Thanks to RJ137 and shellyesq for those extra snippets of information.

Interesting 1938 newspaper notice regarding the name daughter's name being  "Mrs Georgia May Stith". I thought maybe a printing error at first i.e."Smith/Stith", but Smith is her maiden name, and the notice does have "Mrs", indicating another(?) marriage after her marriage (2nd) to Edward Wilcox in 1926. I tried finding that marriage (her 3rd) without success. I have found her first marriage.
