Trying to sort out Ann Carter's parentage
« on: Friday 04 August 17 16:36 BST (UK) »
James Holgate married Ann Carter in Debden on 7 April 1806. The marriage record gives her name as Ann Carter otherwise Moore spinster of this parish and minor.
I have found a baptism for Ann Carter daughter of Sarah Carter on 29 Mar 1789 (born 18 Mar). Which would make her 17 when she married.
There is a marriage between John Moore widower and Sarah Carter widow at Debden on 1 July 1792.

So it looks as if Sarah was widowed when Ann was baptised as no father mentioned, but as she wasn't said to be base born, it would imply Mr Carter had not died very long before and was Ann's father.

But if that was the case why was Ann also known as Ann Moore? Was she actually John Moore's daughter, but he and Sarah weren't free to marry until the first Mrs Moore died.

Can anyone find first marriages for Sarah and John and deaths of their first spouses, please?

There is a Mary wife of John Moore, buried in Debden in April, 1787.

Looks like John buried in Debden in 1831, birth year c1747 and Sarah in 1831, birth year  c1750.

John Moor married Mary Jennings in Debden on 12th February, 1772, both single and of the parish.

The marriage record has a note to the right. I think it says 'this  a minor'. I would say that she was born a carter but used her stepfather's name unofficially?

Thank you everyone, it now seems likely that Ann was born a Carter, but adopted her step fathers surname of Moore.
But who was her natural father? Was Sarah Carter single or widowed when Ann was born?
