Thorogoods/Thurgoods of Shalford
« on: Friday 04 August 17 17:24 BST (UK) »
Hello,

This may be a bit of a strange request.

All persons born Thorogood/Thurgood have been born in the village as far back as I have been able to trace (mid-18th century), and people by that surname still live in the village. Is it possible to trace all the Thorogoods back to a single ancestor who came to the village, or can anyone find an early baptism of a Thorogood in Shalford?

Thanks,

Adam McGregor

The earliest baptism for a THURGOOD in Shalford on FreeReg (which has transcriptions of baptisms from 1670) is Sarah Suckling ( ::)) THURGOOD on 21 Feb 1790 to parents James and Ann. (Suckling appears as a middle name in other baptisms later, so maybe an ancestral name?)

Two other couples are also baptising their children around the same time: Jesse and Sarah as well as Thomas and Elizabeth.

There is also a marriage of John THURGOOD and Ann JUDE on 12 Jan 1797 (John otp).

James THURGOOD was buried at Shalford on 11 Feb 1810 aged 66, so born c 1744. Of course it's hard to say where he was born without quite a bit more research.  ;)

If you widen the search to include similar sounding names, the earliest mention on FreeReg is a marriage of Jane THOROWGOOD to James ROYLEY on 23 March 1773, both otp.

There is also James and Ann THOROGOOD (probably the same couple THURGOOD?) baptising children from 1779, and Jesse and Sarah THOROGOOD (again, probably the same as above) from 1781.

According to his age at burial in 1826, Jesse was born c 1751. He married Sarah TRIGG on 12 August 1777.

Edited to add: found James and Ann's marriage - James THOROGOOD married Ann SUCKLING on 24 Oct 1778 at Shalford.

Thanks for all of that. So they were in the village by at least the late 18th century. Jesse Thorogood/Thurgood born 1751 is my ancestor, and his grandson was named after him. Unfortunately, I don't have any information on the elder Jesse's birthplace. Thanks again.

Sorry can't be more help. Had a look for Jesse's baptism, but as you say, could be anywhere? Though there is the possibility that Jesse and James were brothers (and possibly a sister Jane). Quite a few non-conformists I see with THOROGOOD name.

Thanks anyway. That's certainly a possibility.
