I am trying to find out any military information on Donald Stuart Beaton born 1903 in Aberdeenshire and died 1960 Aberdeenshire. Unsure of which part of the forces he was in but was believed to have been shot during active duty and had a metal plate in his head and was thought to be a tail gunner. I was wondering if anyone recognises the uniform or the initials/wings on his arm?

He was RAF.

As he has been dead for over 25 years anyone can apply to the MoD for a full copy of his service record.

You will need a certified copy of his death certificate (from GRO), £30 fee and the application form for RAF Disclosures at Cranwell.

You do not need anything more such as service number but accurate birth date would help.

To get the RAF forms follow the directions in the "Sticky" post at the top of the forum page - Obtaining Service Records.

The badges are standard shoulder for all Other Ranks RAF uniform - RAF Eagle (or Shite Hawk!) and VR patch for Volunteer Reserve (what 99% of hostilities only joined as).

Just a little added info:

There are a couple of Donald Stuart Beaton's - RAF on www.forces-war-records.co.uk.

You need to type in his middle name too to narrow down the search.
