George Greaves, Died 1888 At South Yorks Asylum, But Where Buried?
« on: Friday 04 August 17 22:09 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I've just discovered I have a relative who was admitted to the South Yorkshire Lunatic Asylum in 1887 and subsequently died there on 05th March 1888 (according to the index of admissions on Findmypast and the Sheffield council website). I now want to find out where he was buried.

Apparently many of the dead from the asylum were buried at Wadsley church. However, after purchasing the index of burials I couldn't find him listed. Neither could I find him via Sheffield Indexers. He doesn't come up on the Barnsley cemeteries website either (he was born in Barnsley and stayed at the Barnsley workhouse before being admitted).

So, now I'm a bit stumped. Any thoughts on where I could look next? Or is it possible that given his situation, and him being (relatively) far from home and family, his burial simply wasn't recorded? Thanks in advance.

Have you checked for variant spellings of the surname?

Have you physically contacted the cemeteries departments or just relied on online databases?

Was there a burial ground at the asylum?

This appears to suggest that some inmates were buried at Wadsley.

My "patient" died in the Asylum, but was buried in her local churchyard (St Mary, Cottonstones) - this is 1894.

Yeah, I've tried all sorts of different combinations. I'll try and contact the burials department directly though, as on further inspection there are a lot more burial sites than the likes of Sheffield Indexers have covered.

Speculating here, but as he came from a workhouse he'd probably lost contact with his family so there wasn't any incentive for the authorities to take his body back to Barnsley?
