Foot Regiment 29 in Ireland?
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 00:18 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace why my Great Grandfather would have been in Enniskillen in 1865. He married there. In 1861 census he was in the Foot Regiment 29 North Camp Farnborough, in 1871 he was a Policeman in Staffordshire. Did the Regiment get stationed in Ireland around 1865. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat Jools

Yes, 29th Regiment of Foot was stationed in Ireland in 1865

Have you looked for his army records? There should be a file for him if he was discharged to pension.

Thank you so much. It clears up a mystery. I know everything else bout him, but it is his wife I am struggling with. She was born to a Thaddeus Glancy, but his birth appears to be in Cork. My problem/wondering is why someone born in Cork, would be in Enniskillen...still digging, but Irish records are hard to follow, especially with a common name like Glancy. Thank you again :)

Have a look at a web site British Military Barracks in County Cork.
This has a list of barracks in the county and a bit on history of each.
Importance of Cork Harbour is highlighted. Spike Island, situated there, is mentioned. (There's also plenty of online info about Spike Island and questions on RC about it.)  Military also occupied other islands in the harbour.  Thousands of soldiers were in Ireland during 19thC. According to the website 20-30,000 at any one time for "maintenance of civil order".
Edit. I tried to do a link but it didn't work.
