Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

The first step is to get the information on her death certificate. This will tell you the names of her parents and husband. You won't be able to view this online, but if someone is going to a Scotland's People Centre they could look it up and transcribe it for you.

There is a Janet Wilson Mitchell born in Rathven in 1892 to Leslie Elmslie Mitchell (police constable, later Chief Constable in Lerwick, Shetland) and Janet Wilson. I can't find any evidence of this (or any other) Janet Wilson Mitchell marrying a Smith in Scotland - nor can I find a death in Scotland for Janet Wilson Mitchell in 1978 - where did she die?

The fact that the John Mitchell who married Isabella Haig Stevenson in 1947 was referred to as John Alexander Mitchell or Smith (your other thread) suggests to me his mother didn't marry his father.

Thanks Ruthelen
from the information I have Janet passed away at Ashley Lodge Aberdeen and is buried at Dufftown

the only other information I have about Janet and her husband (mr smith). was that he had land and had drunk his land away but this I don't actually know.

There's the death of a Jessie Strathde (could be Strathden, it's been truncated in the index) Mitchell or Smith in Dufftown in 1978, but I can't see any other likely candidates in Banffshire or Aberdeenshire for your Janet. You'd need to order the certificate to check whether this is your Janet or not.

More likely to be Strathdee, which is a fairly common name in that part of Banffshire.

Been looking at 1979 deaths in Aberdeen - on the basis that if your Janet Wilson Mitchell died on 25 Dec 1978, it's possible the death wasn't registered until the new year. The closest I can get is a Jessie Wilson Taylor (no other name recorded), who was 80 when she died.

How sure are you that John Alexander Mitchell's mother was Janet Wilson Mitchell - do you have his birth certificate or her death certificate?
