Headstones at All Saints Chapel and St Lawrence Calverley
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 14:51 BST (UK) »
Hi people

I have a few questions I hope Calverley Lad or someone else can answer.

I gather that there's now a War Memorial where All Saints Chapel used to be in Pudsey, and that some of the memorial stones were moved over to St Lawrence when that Church was opened in 1824.  But does that mean some memorial stones were left behind?  Were any graves relocated?  Is there anything of the old Chapel and burial ground still to see around the War Memorial?  What is the street address for the War Memorial?  And when did burials stop in the grounds of both St Lawrence and St Wilfred?

I've got a chance of a quick flying visit next Friday and would love to have a bit more info (I've also got to nip in to the Moravian Church grounds at Fulneck-does that require prior permission?)

In case Calverley Lad or others aren't around at present, you will probably find some answers at the Calverley Info site - http://www.calverley.info/

Sorry I can't answer your questions - I have ancestors from Calverley but (probably) not Pudsey.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks, I've had a look at the Calverley site but can't find what I'm looking for.  I've sent CL a PM also.

Well I am here now, what are you looking for?
Still plenty of room if needed in Calverley, burials taking place most weeks!

All Saints Chapel of Ease stood near where the war memorial stands today. It was demolished when the new church of St Lawrence was built and many of the memorials were removed to the new churchyard nearby.

Thanks for the offer Brian, but hopefully I won't be needing a plot for a bit yet!

I've sent a note to the management of both St Wilfred's and Fulneck churches to see if it is possible to see inside either.

I had a virtual 'drive' around the War Memorial yesterday and it looks like there isn't anything to see of the old Chapel.

I assume you don't want to track down a particular ancestor at Calverley then?
[Would need a name and a burial year to physically locate]

Hi Brian

There is one person I'd be interested in locating at All Saints/St Lawrence's, and that's Mary STANSFIELD (nee PAGE, b 1743) who was buried 5 Sept 1806.

Most of the rest of this branch seem to have been baptised and married in St Wilfred's, but buried in Fulneck.  I understand that there's a chance the later lot will have individually named graves in 'God's Acre'.

Just checking that you managed to locate all you had planned to see?

Thanks Brian, we did pretty well today.  We were fortunate in that the Rev Michael Newman, the current rector at Fulneck, kindly offered to show us the original parish registers, and was able to locate the graves of two of the ancestors we were hunting.  (Many of the slabs were overgrown or covered in moss).  We also had a look at the outside of St Wilfred's, but unfortunately we couldn't go inside.

All in all a very rewarding day of genealogy!
