Richard Watson in York, Ontario
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 15:34 BST (UK) »
I am attempting to find out if Richard Watson was ever married. Richard was born on March 14, 1842 in Toronto and died September 23, 1893. He was the son of John Watson (b. March 7, 1806 in Yorkshire, England) and Christiana Homley (b. abt. 1805 in Yorkshire). Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Globe and Mail newspaper has an extremely short death notice (not unusual for the time).  Just says Richard Watson of lot No 6, East York, died on Sept 23 1893.  No mention of family.  Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Here is his burial record from Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  Looks like the owner of the plot is Est Jno Watson (presumably Ernest John Watson).  The location of the plot is here.  This might help you to find out who is buried with him.

Have you checked the 1891 census?

The closest I could find to a Richard Watson that matched on the 1891 census was for Richardson Watson, 48, single, born Ontario, parents born England with his occupation listed as farmer. He was in the Twp of York, York East. Here's a link (line 6 on top image):

I saw that document earlier, and went on a wild goosechase thinking the Est was a possible wife Esther.... but now I think it means "Estate" of John Watson (his father).  ???

Looks like Richard is still with his parents in the 1881 census and single....

Thank you so much. The Richardson Watson in the 1891 census is the correct one as I recognize some of the other names on the census sheet. The Mary Routliffe that is living in Richard's household is the daughter of one of his neighbors. At least we know he was still single in 1891.
