Caroline Gertrude Gibson/Cork - HELP!!
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 16:26 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have hit a brick wall with my 2x Great Grandparents and am posting on here hoping someone may be able to help me.

On 2nd November 1893 at the Register Office in Newport, William Cork married Caroline Gertrude Gibson. William was living at 75 Nelson Street, and Caroline at 37 Arlington Street. On the record, William is 21yo and Caroline is 20yo. Caroline's father is John Gibson (Hawker of Vegetables).

William & Caroline appear on no Census returns together.

They had two children (possibly 4) - William John Cork 1894 & Eva Elizabeth Cork 1896. The other two possibilities are George Cork born 1899 and registered in Abergavenny and Percy Cork born 1901, again registered in Abergavenny.

In 1901, William Sr. is living alongside his two children (William & Eva) in his father's (John Cork) abode at 26 Hoskin Street. William Sr. is listed as being single, and William Jr. and Eva as son and daughter of their Grandfather John Cork.

By 1911 William Sr. is now listed as a Widower living with his sister and her family, alongside his son William Jr. Eva Cork is living in Taunton, Somerset as a boarder.

So - No sign of Caroline Gertrude Cork/Gibson as of yet!!

But going back to George & Percy Cork. In 1901 I can only find mention of George born in 1899, living with his Grandparents George & Catherine Evans. Which doesn't add up with the info on William & Caroline's marriage certificate. In 1911 George Cork appears again, listed as a boarder in the house of William Webb & CAROLINE GERTRUDE WEBB who is listed as 35, and having been in her current marriage for 8 years producing 4 children. I have found a marriage in 1902 for a William Webb to Caroline Gertrude Thomas.

I have also searched for a birth record for Caroline and only came up with one match for a Caroline Gertrude Gibson born 1871 in Caistor, Lincolnshire to George Gibson & Elizabeth Sage.

So as you can imagine I am quite stuck! I do not know if George & Percy Cork were children to William & Caroline, or where the names Thomas & Evans fit into this. I don't know if it is a case of bigamy, and Caroline trying to cover up her life by telling lies.

If anyone can help, I would be forever grateful!

Many thanks,

Keelan

on the GRO index, the maiden name given for mother on the birth regs for George and Percy is shown as Gibson.

There's a likely remarriage for Caroline Gertrude Webb 15 April 1918 to George Lewis. She is noted as widow and father given as John Thomas, labourer.

William John Cork was baptised 10 Jan 1995 in St Mark's Newport, son of William & Caroline Gertrude.

Have you looked for any of the family on the 1939 register? We're not allowed to do that for you because of copyright.

Bit of a poser isn;t it. I;ve been trying to follow Caroline or George's purported grandmother Catherine Evans backwards to the tredegar/Blaenavon area, or JOhn Gibson in Newport, but without much luck

I've also been searching, but the best I can come up with for Caroline's possible birth is this one:

THOMAS, CAROLINE GIBSON  mmn RAVENHILL
GRO Reference: 1877  D Quarter in NEWPORT  Volume 11A  Page 213

Possibly just my tired eyes, but I haven't found any other Thomas/Ravenhill births in Newport, although there were some a few years earlier in Pontypridd & Cardiff.

1861 census
Common Road, Llanelly, Breconshire RG9/4219 folio 4 pg 11
Robert L Ravenhill head mar 46 mason journeyman b. Glassbury
Ann wife 33 b. Hereford
