I've had another hunt for any more of the family in 1881 without success. Even looked for Catherine's brother Hiram just in case. No sign of him either in 1881, but in 1901 he has a 16 year old Thomas Evans b. Govilon boarding with him who is probably the son of George Evans from the 1891 census in Llanwenarth Ultra.

I struggled to find anyone in 1881 as well, although Hiram is in the newspapers in 1876, having been assaulted, and his address is given as Govilon.

I think this may be Catherine's eldest daughter Elizabeth Ann Thomas in 1881:

Cwm Shinkin, Llanwenarth Ultra
Mary Ann Ravenhill 55 Widow b Ploughfield, Herefordshire
Lizzey Ravenhill 9 Niece b Llanwenarth, Monmouthshire  Scholar

And possibly her son, Robert
Pontypool Union Workhouse, Llanfrechfa Upper
Robert Thomas 8 Inmate b Newport, Monmouthshire  Scholar

This would appear to be his birth   :)
GIBSON, ROBERT JOHN   mmn:    RAVENHILL
GRO Reference: 1873  J Quarter in PONTYPRIDD  Volume 11A  Page 376

Mabel has already posted a possibility for Caroline as Carry Thomas aged 3, adopted daughter of Robert & Mary Shephard

A possibility for John Gibson in the Cardiff Times 20th November 1875 for cruelty to a horse.  His occupation isn't vegetable hawker as per Caroline's marriage certificate, but it does match with the Rag Collector on Elizabeth Ann's baptism  :-\

The article is towards the top of column 7: http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3419763/3419771/136/

Hi Everyone

Apologies for being absent for a while now, I haven't had chance to log into this. Im overwhelmed by all of the research you have done!! I have read through it again and again, and still am a little confused as to where the Gibson name comes in? I notice lots of Evans/Thomas/and Ravenhill's.

Was Caroline Gertrude born a Gibson or as something else?

Thanks again for all of the great info!!

Keelan

Elizabeth Ann Wilson Thomas Oct-Dec 1870 Pontypridd MMN Ravenhill
Robert John Gibson Jan-Mar 1873 Pontypridd MMN Ravenhill
Sarah Ann Gibson Jul-Sept 1874 Pontypridd MMN Ravenhill
Caroline Gibson Thomas Oct-Dec 1877 Pontypridd MMN Ravenhill

So - Caroline Gertrude Gibson may well be Caroline Gibson Thomas and her parents as George John Thomas & Catherine Ravenhill?

Where or why, would Caroline have changed her name and given her father as John Gibson? And why is there 2 kids born as Gibson's and 2 as Thomas' with Caroline having the middle name Gibson.

Oh confusion!

You would really need to buy the birth certificate to see exactly what it says.  John Gibson may well have been her father but not named on the certificate, and if her mother's married surname was Thomas then that's the surname Caroline would have been registered under.

John Robert Robert John Gibson appears to be Caroline's brother, so it may well be worth obtaining his birth certificate too.
