So Catherine married her mother's lodger!    ;D

Except I can;t find a marriage!

Looking for Catherine in 1881 and 1891 at the moment - and where does the Gibson come in, I wonder?

Hold on - looks like it's going to get more confusing!

1891 - havelock Place Cardiff

John Brooks    44 - general labourer b Kent
Catherine Brooks    42 - b Rhondda
Elizabeth A Brooks    69 [19] - married (??) daughter b Rhondda
Robert T Brooks    16 - son b Rhondda
Caroline G Brooks    14 - b Newport [ transcribed by Ancestry as Carolein

there's a marriage in 1899 in Abergavenny which includes George Evans and Catherine Brooks!

1891  -  George Evans lodger 50 widower b. [Herefordshire], Knighton

You seriously think this is the same person?

People lie about their age to narrow age gaps - looks like Caroline Gertrude did on her first marriage.

The info on censuses is only as good as the informant - on 1891 it may not have been George who gave his details and someone made an assumption/guess

george Evans and infant daughter Emily are on 1881 in the same area. George is listed as 35 and b Pembridge, Herefordshire

George Evans is in Llanwenarth Ultra from 1871 to 1911 census entries, his age is consistently inconsistent. The Knighton, Herefordshire isn't reliable. The Herefordshire is dittoed from Ann's entry above and Knighton is in Radnorshire. George gives Pembridge as his place of birth on other entries, about 6 miles south east from Presteigne.

Caroline's surname at birth was Thomas, so I don't think Catherine married Mr Gibson. Not sure she married Mr Brooks either.
Think the Newport birth cert for Caroline and Catherine's marriage cert to George Evans needed to be sure.

I've been away a for a few days so am just catching up with this - the Caroline Gibson Thomas mmn Ravenhill certainly looks promising  :)

Interesting too that Caroline registered her daughter Doris May Webb using the mmn of Thomas but used Evans for Nellie (Ellen Jane), James Henry & Hiram, the latter apparently named for her mother's brother.

I also found transcripts of these baptisms, which seem to fit with the names of Catherine's children in 1871 & 1891, but I don't know if it helps or simply adds to the confusion of Catherine & her 'husbands':

St Woolos, Newport
22 Oct 1877, Elizabeth Ann d/o John & Catherine Thomas of St Woolos, Rag Gatherer Collector
3 Dec 1877, Robert John s/o John & Catherine Thomas of St Woolos, Labourer
3 Dec 1877, Caroline d/o John & Catherine Thomas of St Woolos, Labourer
