G Hays HURST
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 23:38 BST (UK) »
On 8 January 1915, the "Stockport Advertiser" published a list of servicemen from the parish of St Paul, Heaton Moor.  One of these was "G Hays Hurst", supposedly serving in the 16th Battalion, Manchester Regiment.  I'm failing lamentably to identify him, either on military or civil records, and would appreciate any input.

Heaton Moor, on the outskirts of Stockport, was in Cheshire, but came under Heaton Norris (Lancashire) registration sub-district.  Having searched for others on the list, I can say that spelling wasn't always accurate, and in addition the microfilm I consulted was of poor quality, so the name may not be 100% accurate. :/

Failing too I'm afraid even changing the spelling to Hirst.

However there are possible Hirst/Hays marriages in Dewsbury district that might be worth checking out.

Dec 1896
Amy Hays
Albert Hirst
Herbert Heward
Ellen Sykes

Note I don't know who married who yet so H/H might not match up

The other possible marriage is 1874 - would that be too old?

Thanks everyone - at least I hadn't missed anything obvious.

Like Jim, I wondered whether the surname should be Hayhurst, but nothing is leaping out at me.  :(

Have you considered Hazlehurst as a possible surname?   I don't think it's who you're looking for but there was a George Hazlehurst in the 24th and a Joseph Warburton Haslehurst in the 16th, plus a few others I haven't followed up on.    The Manchester City Battalions Book of Honour also mentions an O Hazlehurst, but the only one I can find a medal card for was in the Lancashire Fusiliers.

I'll add Hazlehurst to the search - phonetically it's pretty close to "Hays Hurst".  ;)
