Maggie you confine yourself to an exact spelling FIlchie but that doesn’t allow for member of the family who couldn’t spell their own name, the many transcribers who also made errors, then the index makers etc and finally the sound of the name  here is a good glimpse of just Co Down records which include parts of Belfast south of the Lagan river. Hello BallyaltikilliganG  and thank you for such a quick response! I'm aware of the spelling anomalies  but feel FITCHIE is a bit of a stretch from the FILCHIE family who I know resided in Northern Ireland. I believe this is a derivation of FILSHIE who originated from Old Kilpatrick, Scotland in the early years. I have just one family (Elizabeth Filshie who married John Dickson in1855) who resided in Ireland and then emigrated to the US that I'm looking for her ancestry. Her father was John Filchie. There are others named Filchie or Filchey who made the journey across the pond from Ireland but I'm unable to connect the dots...

The Fitchie surname I think is genuine and not a typographical error. However I think the newspaper transcriptions may be. I'm happy to be corrected if I can find a link to substantiate that the Fitches were not Filchies as both seem to be used in the newspaper transcriptions. Cheers Maggie

When I looked at the headstone for Eliza Galbraith on Billiongraves, it's definitley Fitchie and not Filchie. Hence my confusion with the online newspaper transcriptions mentioning Filchie.
