Have you located death notices or obituaries for the parents William and Elizabeth  ???  Wonder if they might they mention a grandson  ???

Not showing up for me on the 1921 census so far.

Aha! now there's a plan thank you - I'll get on that. I noted that someone suggested that as Robert wasn't mentioned in his brother's obit that he was probably dead already. Hadn't taken the thinking on
Cheers, Ian

Yes Sandra, I now notice that, oops!!

One thing that has come forward during a further rummage, a birth of an Elizabeth Simpson Gullan, 13th August 1866, Fogo, Berwick, Scotland. Her father was Robert Gullan and mother was Mary Campbell. Noting her birth date, I wonder if she comes into the equation somewhere??

Regards

Malky

Hi Malky, indeed they do, all those in my tree thanks, that's where Robert's middle name comes from.

Ancestry has records from Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland, New Zealand, which show:
- William Robert Burnside (died 1976)
- and "his beloved mother" Nellie Shewan Blackwell (died 1977).

Here is the cemetery's website:
http://waitakere.govt.nz/cnlser/cm/cemeterysearch/

You might be able to find their obits on Trove (I haven't checked):
http://trove.nla.gov.au/

Updated to say: Probably not -- Trove is for Australia (my bad).

Josephine

This website has Nellie Shewan Burnside marrying William Charles Blackwell in 1930 but doesn't list a source:
http://www.familytreecircles.com/u/ngairedith/?for=&next=201

Updated to say: You can find their marriage in the index here:
https://bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/

And you can also purchase a copy of the record.

Good luck! I think it's them!

Josephine

New Zealand BMDs give a 1930 marriage for Nellie (CKA Nellie Shewan) Burnside to William Charles Blackwell.
