Just had a quick look.

In the 1880 US census he is 19yrs a servant farm labourer living with and working for the  Birmingham family
1900 US census he is married to Sarah and states he migrated in 1880 and states 19yrs in US

Would a 16 yr old in 1876 naturalise?
Did he migrate alone or with James/Mary his parents

Add: 1910 he states 1882 he migrated, but he is already in the US 1880 census

1871 he is with his family and 1881 James/Mary are still living in the UK along with his brother George, in 1891 both parents are 72yrs old still living in the UK........... so it seems he did go alone

It seems he settled in Michigan and just having a look it states

"Major ports of entry to Michigan have been New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Quebec. The Family History Library, the National Archives and Ancestry.com have passenger lists for American ports for the years 1820 to 1924 and indexes for 1820 to 1943. Quebec City passenger lists, 1865-1900 are at Public Archives of Canada "

His obit states:

"Mr. Sugar was born in England in 1861 and came to this country when around 20 years of age."

Thanks everyone, as always you've done me proud. My thoughts were that 16 was young to go alone as I knew his parents stayed home. I'll spend some time looking at the 1876  one as a number of Shugar/Sugars  went to Pennsylvania from the Rhondda area having moved from Somerset in mid C19. From agriculture to mining must have been a horrific leap

RJ137 Any chance of a copy of his obit?
