Marriage Cert Henry Hamper and Lydia Juniper, Westmeston, Sussex
« on: Monday 07 August 17 05:15 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

New member from Canada and fairly new to genealogy. I've made a lot of headway, but I'm a little stuck and I'm not sure if what I'm looking for even exists.

I've established that Henry married Lydia Juniper, 4th, November, 1823 in Westmeston, Sussex. However, it's little more than a registration, just their names, no witnesses, no parental names. I've previously used the various censuses and marriage documents to link and confirm other parentage for other couples, but obviously I've run out of censuses for this couple at this date :)

I suspect Lydia's parents are Samuel and Mary, but I can't confirm that.
I know their four children were all baptised in Westmeston: Henry, John, Emma and William.

Civil Registration, and therefore Marriage Certificates, came into being on 1st July 1837.
Before that date you have to rely on Parish Register entries.

FamilySearch only has the entry from its "England, Marriages 153801873" collection - and that only has the basic details you have found.

So, you need to find out where the parish registers for Westmeston are held?
They will be at East Sussex Record Office, at The Keep.

From the BT -
Marriage was by Banns
No marital status given.
Henry + Lydia both of the parish
They both marked
Witnesses William Marchant, William Hemsley
(Hemsley was a "regular" witness)

The only other marriage at Westmeston that year was on 21 April, George Hamper of the parish of Street + Mary Jane Peckham (both single). Witnessed by a Henry Hamper and a Jane Hamper (all marked)
John

A Henry Hamper married in Street Sussex in 1714. This was from the free search on FindMyPast, so I don't have any other details. Maybe it can be found on familysearch

Found on FS, but only BT

This HH married Elizabeth Alcock on 14 July 1714. Record doesn't list witnesses, parishes or status unfortunately
