Help - photo restoration and dating

the attached photograph is taken from a family bundle of photos that relate to my Mum's Mum's branch of the family tree. My Gran's maiden name was Chieco and I believe this photograph shows the family circa late 1920s. The family were from Gallipoli in Southern Italy.

If our assumptions are correct then the baby is my Gran (1928-2003) and the lady holding her is her mum Matilde (1892-1983)

Dating: If this assumption is correct then the photo must be taken approx. 1928-29. Can anyone advise if this fits with the (Italian) style of fashion, hair etc.

Restoration: The photograph is in poor condition. It is actually in several pieces and has been crudely secured together using packaging tape. Can anyone offer assistance with its restoration.

Ps, I have not used this part of the forum before. I scanned the photo at 600dpi but found I have to reduce the quality to allow me to comply with the upload limits.

Certainly 1920's but couldn't pin it down to 1928 but there's no reason it couldn't be.

This is such a wonderful photo. Sorry I haven't spent the time making it as great as it once was but here is a repair attempt. A few wobbly fingers and faces that are just not perfect but better then the rips.
Hopefully someone else will post another soon. A lot of work to be done in this one.

Great work Loord74. I can now see the rookie mistake I made with the joins in the photo. I was confused as to why the young girl had such a thick leg!! Wasn't her thick leg, rather my thick head

Wow - I am watching this post with great interest (and much appreciation). 

I have some Photoshop skills but these are rusty as time to play/practice is very limited. It is interesting to see what can be achieved. I am particularly intrigued to see what results can be achieved with the face of the gentleman located top middle (whose name I await conformation of from family)

stsearcher's image appears sharper when compared to the later two versions (which seem slightly blurred) - is this seeming blurring of the edges an intentional step in the process?

I've tried to sharpen it a little since your comment. Blurring for me, is like when you see a pencil artist blend certain areas in with their finger. I tend to blur areas that I don't have the skills to re-draw    Unfortunately, I couldn't draw if my life depended on it. Another problem for me, is that when I have been staring at a photo for 6 hours, like I have with this, I still manage to miss things that I see immediately I upload it...
