RC baptism, Holbeach?
« on: Monday 07 August 17 12:56 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

My ggg uncle, John Joseph McCabe was born c 1863 in Holbeach.  Can anyone recommend a RC church where he might have been baptised please?  And if so, could some one please search for an entry please?

With kind regards.

The only one is Holy Trinity in Foxes Lowe Road, Holbeach however it was not there in 1863

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/Holbeach#Churches
So likely baptisms were done in another RC local church maybe St Mary, Horncastle road,  Boston (founded in 1826)
Immaculate Conception and St Norbert, Henrietta Street Spalding was founded in 1876, so not that one

Thank you.  Hmmm so St Mary, Horncastle road,  Boston  seems the likely candidate?

Is there someone who would be able to do a look up for me there please?

Yes the other children were baptised RC in Yorkshire, the family moving there about 1865.

Also, I've no idea why there were in County Durham in 1861, then Holbeach in 1863, and then back in up north in Yorkshire in 1865. Any ideas?  Was something big happening in and around Holbeach in 1863?

The GRO shows that the other children had the mothers maiden name was McCluskey/McClusky or Cluskey and registered in Stockton or Middlesbrough.

John's birth was registered in Holbeach Q3 1862 but as John James McCeve, mother's mmn McCluskey.

Patrick McCabe and Alice McCluskey were married Q4 1861 in Darlington district.

It sounds as though they were in the Holbeach area for a short time and so could John have been baptised in Yorkshire?

Possible burials for his parents:
Patrick McCabe
Birth year: 1839
Death date: 10 Sep 1898
Burial date: 12 Oct 1898
Burial place: St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Middlesbrough

Alice McCabe
Birth year: 1841
Death date: 09 Oct 1906
Burial date: 13 Oct 1906
Burial place: St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Middlesbrough

Any possible churches towards Peterborough? or into Cambridgeshire (Wisbech)?

Which ever direction, it would have been a long round trip in 1863.

What was his father's occupation? The railway came to Holbeach in 1862.

Ah thank you for this - his father was a iron worker when in Middlesbrough, so perhaps he did work on the rail in the early 1860s?  Sorry but I've no idea about RC chapels or churches in that area.

Ah wow, dcbnwh, I've looked for that birth some time back and how nice to see you found it - I assumed, wrongly, it hadn't been recorded.

Correct too on the parent burials.

I can account for all of the children, except John.  The two eldest girls, Mary Ellen and Jane emmigrated to either Alice's (the mother) brother or cousin in 1884 (Jim McClusky in Clinton Junction, Rock County, near Milwaukee, Wisconsin).  I know all about his death and he fought in the US Civil War, BUT can't confirm his parents which would be helpful.

Regardless, John and his sister Alice emmigrated to the US in 1887.  Alice returned to the UK at least twice, if not even three times.  She couldn't settle in the US.  John, however, is the mystery. According to my grandfather, he left his uncles to work in an industry and apparently liked to drink.  When he returned home drunk one night, he was thrown out of his lodgings, and went to sleep under one of the machines where he worked.  The next morning it was switched on and he was cut in two but lived for three days with only half a body.  I'd love to confirm this tragic story but searching has been difficult.

You may like to get this Cert if you think it is him to find cause of death;

John McCABE
Birth; 1863 England
Death: 18 January 1893, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania
Burial: 21 January 1893, Saint Marys
Parents Patrick and Ann McCabe
(although Mother as Ann it depends how much the informant knew)

The info and image is on Familysearch. Org but it wont load for me.

I just searched;
John Joseph McCabe born 1863-1863 England
Any United States.
