Obituary Pittsburgh January 1893
« on: Tuesday 08 August 17 18:39 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I'm looking for an obituary of a relative of mine, John McCabe, who was involved in an accident in January 1893 in Pittsburgh.  He actually died on 18th January, the accident occuring two days earlier.

I've search the online newspapers on Find My Past but can't seem to find anything.

Any other ideas?

Please see this thread for further details:

Recommendations For Watchmen

The coroner held an inquest yesterday in the case of John McCabe, aged 30 years, who was so badly burned at the Keystone mill on Second avenue on the night of January 8, that he died at Mercy hospital yesterday. McCabe was employed as a puddler at the mill, and on the night mentioned wandered into the mill yard in an intoxicated condition and fell asleep on a hot cinder bank. A verdict was found according to the facts and the Keystone Mill company recommended to hire competent watchmen to see no further accidents of a similar nature occurred.

Ah my word!  That seems to be it.  And it seems to match the family story my grandfather told me - thank you so much for this.  Where did you access the newspaper record please?

Thank you again!

Ah thank you - odd that they thought he would survive.

It's just a short one liner.

..."John McCabe, who died from burns received while at work in the Keystone rolling mill will be buried by the workmen."...

====
The other date you mentioned is for a Joseph McCabe

Thank you so much for this - it is much appreciated.  My granddad told me about this in about 2002, so it has been a long time trying to confirm all of the story.  Thank you.
