Who were the children of Lucy Scrutton née Davies
« on: Wednesday 09 August 17 00:33 BST (UK) »
As a follow on to this thread, I'm left with the problem of identifying three additional children.

Quick summary

Martha Lucy Davies married Robert Scrutton Q3 1897 in Birmingham.
I have identified three children
Eva Elizabeth Scrutton born Q4 1898, died Q1 1915
Robert James Scrutton born 25 Oct 1899, died 19 Oct 1984
Lucy Scrutton, born 27 Aug 1902

However, in court in Reigate on 29th May 1942, she is reported to have have three sons and three daughters.
At the same court hearing, she seems to claim she had had six children by 1907.

On the 1939 Register she is living with another daughter, Gladys M Thompson, born 7 May 1912 and her husband Louis J Thompson. Gladys M Scrutton and Louis J Thomson married Q3 1934 in Westminster district.

But I can't find Gladys's birth registration.
And that still leaves one more daughter, and two more sons to find.

Entries in the Police Gazette and court reports reveal that she Martha Lucy Scrutton also went by the following aliases:
Lucy Davies
Lucy M Scrutton
Nellie Ware
Lucy Scruton
Lucy Mary Lake
Martha Lucy Frost

There is a Gladys Davies with mothers maiden name Davies born September qtr 1912 West Derby 8b 1328.

Do you have Martha in 1911?  Maybe that will reveal other names.

Do you have the following:
May of 1918 son Robert joins up re WWl
His address then was 136 A Spon/Spain? Street, Coventry, he gives his next of kin as Lucy Scrutton, mother  same address.
Religion Baptist , so perhaps baptism if any fall under non conformist churches.
His number was 3634 assigned to the Royal Guernsey Regiment.
5' 2 1/2 inches tall, brown hair, brown eyes, pale complexion and a machinist by trade.
He served in France and was discharged at the end of 1919.
This is on ancestry.

There's a Robert Scrutton on the 1911 Census whose age, occupation and place of birth fits the Robert Scrutton with Lucy, Eva and Robert in Liverpool on the 1901 Census. This Robert is lodging with a family - on his own.

Ancestry 1911 transcribed as Lucy Daves in Birmingham, Eva and Robert are with her.
She fibbed about children,  or they were still born and not recorded, in which case she fibbed on the 1911 census.

I've been puzzling over the Birmingham 1911 Census!!

There's a Robert Scrutton on the 1939 Register who "fits" the Robert Scrutton on the 1901/1911 Census re. age and occupation. However, his marital status does not "fit" the fact that Lucy was in court in 1942.

Lucy describes herself as a widow in the 1942 court case.

Thanks everyone.  Some good leads to be getting on with!

There is a Gladys Davies with mothers maiden name Davies born September qtr 1912 West Derby 8b 1328.

I've now spotted a Gladys M Davies with mother's maiden name Davies Q2 1912, King's Norton district which fits better with the amondg's finds (for which many thanks).

Yes, I suspected from the court reports that there is a certain amount of fibbing and embroidering of the truth been done by Lucy.

When I found them living apart on the 1939 register, describing themselves as widowed, I presumed they'd split up and widowed was just a useful description, to avoid awkward questions.

The Lucy, Eva and Robert Dav(i)es on the 1911 census in Birmingham, definitely look like them, barring Lucy's birthplace.  But of course it then raises the question as to who the head of the household (and purportedly Lucy's husband), Harry Davies is.  I wondered if it might be a brother, but I'm not convinced, as I'd have thought an elder brother would be born Shrewsbury. Or at least that would have been a clincher.  It isn't impossible, that she has met and married Harry Davies, and the surname is a coincidence, and so he could be Gladys' father.

What a perplexing family!
