"Secret" Codes on Death Certificates!

I was notified of this today - From Quebec FH Society Facebook page. I thought it might be useful for some!

"The “Secret” Codes on Death Certificates That Can Tell You How Your Ancestors Died". I'm not sure if this coding is used outside Canada though, as I've never seen it on any of my certificates, but it would certainly be useful world wide!

Thank you.  Very useful.  I've just checked a few death certificates and found the codes to be used, at least sometimes, in Ohio, California and Missouri.
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis

Oh Goody!  Really pleased that you found it useful Erato!  I guess if they were used in the USA too, they may well be in other countries too!

I have seen those written on some of the early death certificates and cemetery registers from when we were still a colony, wondered what they were now I know. :D

Good one 3sd - so now you know!!  Isn't it funny how things like this just pop up out of the wild blue yonder when you least expect them!

I'll have to take a browse through my death certificate collection.

Just as an aside, and rather sad, I have a death certificate of a very young child.  It states she died due to an accidental overdose of medicine given by her mother!

I can't get past the heading for the link given.
But it says ICD codes on Death Certificates.

they are hardly 'secret' !  They are the official (?international?) codes for diseases, operations, etc.
