Can't make out the address
« on: Wednesday 09 August 17 09:04 BST (UK) »
The attached image is a snippet from a children's home register in Fulwood, Preston.

Background (if it helps) is that the boy's father died in May 1899, Mum had no other means of support and she and her 5 children were admitted to the workhouse in Liverpool in Oct 1899. This child was then sent to Kirkdale Industrial School, Liverpool in late Oct 1899 and remained there till Dec 1902 when he went to Fulwood.

Its the second line down that I can't read. As it says 'in' I think Mum may well have been in some sort of institution/hospital/whatever rather than at an address.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be grateful.
Thanks

Boo

Looks like it starts with a "B" same as the first line then ends in "atory" maybe but not sure what the rest of it is  :-\

Would the entry be relating to the child rather than the mother?

Thanks for looking
Millipede: It refers to the mother, its in a column headed Name and Address of nearest known relative and has ditto marks to the previous line where it says mother.

a-l : I think ending looks like the ing in Burlington on the line above and Building is a possibility but it would have been good if they'd given a clue as to WHICH building, somewhere in the North West :-)

Do either of you see a sort of superscript above the main word, just after the B? Not sure if I am imagining it, though even if I am not I can't make it out
To be honest its not the writing but the awful pen nib that's probably caused the problem. Typically I can read all the other lines its just the one I am interested in that is defeating me.

Thanks again for taking the time to look, much appreciated.

Boo

I too thought it said Building. There seems to be a possible superscript after the'B', but it could also be a smudge ::) Or was it intended to read
Bsomething building?

Coming to it from a different angle - where was Mum in 1901?  was she still at the Liverpool workhouse?

I'm struggling to see it as anything other than "in Building", so I wonder if the mother might have been somewhere in the same institution?

You might find more about the place on the Children's Homes website - the Lancashire page is at http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/list/Lancashire.shtml - or its sister site relating to workhouses etc - http://www.workhouses.org.uk/
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I was thinking the same thing arthur except I couldn't be sure it was building. Being in a different part makes perfect sense.
