Highland Light Infantry
« on: Wednesday 09 August 17 09:42 BST (UK) »
My grand-father is recorded in his sons birth certificate in 1916 as - Segeant in 1/5 Highland Light Infantry.

However, he then is a Lance corporal in the 1/7 HLI in 1918 . He was killed in Aug 1918. Andrew Barr 260252 1/7 HLI

From the basic word of mouth from family members now dead - he was wounded in 1915 - and maybe discharged?

Where can I find out more about him being discharged and recalled or rejoining for duty? Thanks

William

Could you check the information you have.  A 210252 (or 201252) L/Cpl Andrew Barr 7th Bn HLI husband of Robertina son of George and Jessie died in Aug 1918, there is no record for the number you gave.

I suggest that these are two different men.  An Andrew Barr of 5th Bn HLI of Highcraydale (bad writing) Road Glasgow father George of Port Dundas did serve from 1911 although not overseas and was discharged unfit in April 1915.

Thanks Max.

I think they are the same. He lived at 104 High Craighall Road, Glasgow  his wife was Robertina and his father was George.

I see now that the same family details apply to both 1266 Andrew Barr and 201252 Andrew Barr.  So back to your original question.

1266 Andrew of 5th Bn had three spells in hospital in Scotland after his battalion was embodied for full time service in Aug 1914.  19 days in Oct/Nov 14 Craigleith Hospital Edinburgh with an undescended testicle and hernia for which he had an operation.  There then comes 9 days in Jan 15 with pain at the site of the operation and admitted in Mar 15 again with pain.  He refused a further operation.  He was discharged on 19 April 1915 at Leven unfit for further military service.  He was again admitted to hospital in Jun 15 for observation for an operation.  Unclear how this came about as he had already been discharged.

Calculating his gratuity gives a second enlistment date of July 1915 so the fine fellow, although missing one of two important things, joins up again.  Not recalled but volunteered.  His service record, if it had survived, would have had details of his previous service.  He clearly fooled the doctors the second time around, good for him.

Thanks Jim.  For the record, centrehalf has been in touch by PM and I've sent links to the medal card, war diaries and Effects Register.

I'd be interested in your take on the man being discharged in April and then enlisting in July!  Pity his second lot of records are missing.
