Jim

This will amuse you.  After discharging him and then letting him serve again, they then issued two sets of BW and V medals by mistake.  The family sent one lot back!

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

I must admit I'm a bit baffled by the attention he was getting from the RAMC after discharge.
It may be a case of as he wasn't overseas & his condition was being treated prior to his discharge that there was an obligation to continue his treatment as by 17/6/15 (under observation for operation) he appears to have agreed a further operation. Whether it took place isn't mentioned. 16/9/15 he's removed from the pension list so now graded as fit but as he'd been discharged under para. 392/xvi he couldn't return to his Regt.
I think he was fighting his discharge all the way as it wasn't confirmed until 16/2/16.
As he re-volunteered you have to admire his determination even though it cost him his life.
With regard to his medals, I'd have kept both sets.

As you know your man died on the 27/28th.
His Batt. were at Henin which is just SE of Arras.
They were part of a major offensive against the Hindenburg Line (yellow) which was a huge purpose built trench system built following the Somme Offensive in 1916.
After it's construction the Germans gave up all forward ground & retreated to this line believing it to be impenetrable.
At 6 am. of the 27th. the 7/Batt. HLI were along the blue line on the sunken rd. they made there way to the green line which was their "jumping off point" this is where the attack began.
At 9.20 am. following a barrage from the RA they set off but were held up by m/g fire, mortars & shellfire but got into the line where they made their way along the trench system to the red line & waited for contact with the other Batt's. (5 & 6 HLI). The then started to make their way to Riencourt to the SW but were held up by heavy artillery. They were relieved at 3 am. of the 28th.
